Big Idea/Topic of Study:
Continue to develop my students' writing and myself professionally along my PhD journey.
Explain your reason for choosing your Big Idea/Topic of Study
I am currently finishing up Year 1 of my English PhD program at IUP. One of the main goals of the program is to become a teacher/scholar and eventually publish research in reputable journals. By choosing the four domains that I did, I will be able to progress as a professional in the field and community of academia personally, but also for the betterment of my students - in class or those potentially transitioning to college.
Focus Components from Danielson's Framework for Teaching
Domain 1 - Component E
Designing Coherent Instruction
Reason: In the Fall, I'm taking a composition theories class every Monday evening, so whatever I learn, I try to add new "instructional materials and resources" to 1-2 "lessons and unit structures."
Domain 2 - Component C
Managing Classroom Procedures
Reason: This year, each day begins with a different "classroom routine" and helps with the "transition" between the bellringer and the day's objectives. Monday is Sentence Study, Tuesday is Tune Tuesday, Wednesday is a Quote Discussion, Thursday is a new test strategy, and Friday is Freewrite Friday.
Domain 3 - Component E
Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness
Reason: I don't like to do the same thing every year for not only my students' betterment and learning, but for my sanity as well. So, every week, I frequently "adjust lessons" to help speed up and be "persistent" with "responses to students."
Domain 4 - Component D
Participating in a Professional Community
Reason: Because of my PhD pursuit, I have a huge "involvement in the culture of professional inquiry" not only for myself as an educator, but in the profession of academia. Also, I wish to develop "relationships with colleagues," especially between buildings.
