Instructional Delivery: Evidence Item #4
Item Name:
Vocabulary/Unit Test Example
Description of Item:
This is an example of one of my vocab/unit tests that I give to my Advanced English II students. Each test is separated into four parts: vocabulary matching, vocabulary in-context, Keystone Literature, and the constructed response.
Reflection:
I know a lot of English teachers who are not fans of standardized testing, but to quote my colleague, Mr. Williams, I think it's important for advanced students to "sweat a little" when it comes to what they know. I organize all of my units by the words. I teach a word per day and after 20 words, they will have a test on the words and any content that was taught during that time. The first part, vocabulary matching, tests the kids on their ability to actually study vocabulary, which is a valuable skill to have in college and in life. The second part, vocabulary in-context, hits two birds with one stone because they need to know the definition of the word, but also the content/context of the sentences provided, which are based on the material that was taught in class. The Keystone Literature part includes actual passages from texts discussed and then includes a variety of Keystone-style multiple-choice questions, in preparation for the May exam. The last part, the constructed response, tests the students' abilities to respond to a task inspired by one of the discussions that we had in class. This all inclusive test really touches all the bases and gives me a firm grasp on what content has been mastered and what content still needs some work moving forward.
