Instructional Delivery: Evidence Item #2
Item Name:
5 Minute Journals
Description of Item:
This is the concept of the 5 minute journal and how it came about.
Reflection:
In 2017, I came across a book entitled, Do Over by Jon Acuff, and in it, he mentioned something about a 5 minute journal. The concept is every day, you write in a journal for 5 minutes straight. To be honest, I thought it was ridiculous and childish. And then I read another book shortly after entitled, Tools of Titans, by Tim Ferriss. The premise of the book is that he interviewed over 300 successful people in various careers and asked about their strategies, stories, and pointers towards being “successful.” Over 70% of them mentioned the 5-minute journal… so I figured, why not?
Every day, we write for 5 minutes in this journal. Sometimes there's a prompt that leads discussion; other times, they can write about whatever they want - but the key is to write for 5 minutes straight. Ideas, poems, diary entries, goals, the possibilities are endless. We have tons of ideas every day but we forget most of them… this allows you to write them down. If you are ever stuck, do the following: 3 things you’re grateful for… 3 things that would make today great or made today great (depending on when you’re writing)... and an affirmation statement, “I am…” which is a statement that focuses on what they want to create in their lives.
