PDE Standards -- III. Professionalism
III.A. Professional Organizations, publications, and resources
Rating: Advanced
Description: The English Journal and Classroom Notes Plus are sources that introduce fresh, new, and intriguing concepts, lessons, and/or projects that can be used in an English classroom immediately and effectively. When my professor at Penn State recommended that we become members and subscribers of both mediums, I had to try them out. I’m glad I did. Every new issue symbolizes my growth as an educator and learner, and every new concept or lesson provided adds to my already impressive resume of collected and proven ideas.
Reflection: My students’ learning obviously gains from these two sources because I have used a handful of lessons, concepts, and/or ideas in my classes already.

III.B. Integrity and ethical behavior, professional conduct as stated in Pennsylvania’s Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators; and local, state, and federal laws and regulations
Rating:Advanced
Description: Besides being a certified teacher, I have to follow Pennsylvania's Code of Professional Practice and Conduct with everything that I did involving my inline hockey team because of its status at the school and around the community. The artifacts that I have included are as followed: a copy of my PA Certification, a blog I wrote on misinformed students, a diabetes research paper that I wrote based on the results of a survey taken by the students of Belle Vernon Area, and a photo that I created which was included on the front of my hockey team's banquet booklets.
Reflection: The blog on misinformed students really helped me understand and take into consideration those students who struggle with concepts because they truly have been misinformed on background information all these lives at home and in the media. Because of this knowledge, I have since changed how I present new material. As for the diabetes research, which I did in a professional manner for a large community event in which we raised over $1,000.00, I learned a lot about diabetes and have since changed my lifestyle to avoid obtaining this insidious disease.

III.C. Collaborating with school colleagues to enhance student, teacher and administrative capabilities and improve student learning
Rating:Advanced
Description: In order to write my technology grant and lab proposal, I had to interview three teachers including the principal at Belle Vernon Area High School. By completing these interviews, I successfully "collaborated with school colleagues" to possibly "enhance student, teacher, and administrative capabilities" if my grant is someday used at the district. If my technology grant and/or proposal is ever utilized, then the new lab will surely "improve student learning" due to its innovative design and potential usage.
Reflection: Although this grant did not "grant" me a job at Belle Vernon due to outside reasons irrelevant to this reflection, I truly enjoyed putting it together. I asked Dr. Carbonara if I could tailor my grant towards an actual districts' needs, and he gave me his best wishes to continue with the project. After interviewing a handful of opinionated teachers at the high school and the building principal, I tailored the grant to the building's needs and wants. I honestly believe it is one of the best projects I created at Duquesne.
