PDE Standards -- I. Knowing the Content
I.A. Identification, selection, installation and maintenance of technology infrastructure, and hardware and software applications for school administration and instruction including:
- Design and production of media including projected and non-projected visual aids, audio and video production in both analog and digital forms, and photography using film-based and digital formats
Rating: Advanced
Description: Before this poster, I never had any experience with PhotoShop. Naturally, I was worried because the class introduced PhotoShop as if all the students used it before. The thought process behind it was simple: I wanted to "design and produce" an educational poster using "digital photography" featuring someone in pop culture who kids could relate to. Around the time of its creation, Lil Wayne dominated the music charts. Literary terms are important to English but are often overlooked and misunderstood. Once I showed this poster to actual students; they loved it.
Reflection: My poster, I believe, went above and beyond the task assigned because I did not settle with a motivational poster; I actually "designed media including projected visual aids" for an English classroom touching on something taught in class. This activity helped me grow as an educator because it marked the first time that I used Photoshop. The project definitely will foster student learning because of its connectivity to the times and the recognition of the quotes used as examples.

- Evaluation of the performance of hardware and software components of computer systems

Description: My website evaluations reflect this standard because of what it asks for: evaluations. I feel that I receive an advanced rating because of the comment that I received from my professor on the assignment. She said, “Very creative! I'm impressed. I have to admit, I would have never thought to use Twitter in the classroom. Excellent job of thinking outside of the box!”
Reflection: This activity helped me grow as an educator using technology because it permitted me to look deeper into technological assets, especially the Internet. The knowledge obtained was actually used in an assignment given later on. My students and their learning will gain from my observations because they will reap the benefits from my abilities to take prior knowledge and apply it to future lessons, projects, and/or assignments.

I.B. Integrating technology into curricular planning and instructional design including:
- Access and use telecommunications for information sharing, remote information access and retrieval, and multi-media/hypermedia publishing
Rating: Advanced
Description: I created and published this website online to not only “show off” my achievements and work, but to create a platform for districts, professors, students, and parents to "access and retrieve information" about myself as an educator and all that I am capable of providing in and out of the classroom. The website, especially this page featuring my portfolio, helps me grow as an educator because it is my own teaching “scrapbook” that I can grow off of year in and year out. This scrapbook includes all lesson plans, projects, student work, and various other "multi-media" used in my lessons. My students and their learning will grow because they will know what my expectations are going into a class. To quote Joe Paterno, “Preparation is key.”
Reflection: As shown, all of my work completed so far at Duquesne University is featured and presented for the public to view at their convenience. I update my e-portfolio at least once a month, sometimes twice a month depending on what I accomplish or what goals I reach. This e-portfolio, for example, has been two years in the making. It started off as a class assignment for Penn State, then it turned into my online resume/portfolio, and now it includes this e-portfolio for my Master's at Duquesne.

- Electronic mail and internet resources for communications and instructional support
Rating: Proficient
Description: The two online classes that I took Fall Semester 2009 provided a discussion board in which professors and classmates had to ability "to communicate" with each other on work turned in and various other classroom technology discussions for "instructional support." I gave myself a proficient because the discussion board is something that I have used before this class, so I was not that into it compared to other aspects of the class.
Reflection: The boards helped me grow as an educator because I had the ability to view my fellow classmates’ ideas and concepts and reply to them at my own convenience. My students gained from this because I learned about new concepts and lessons that I used in the future that I didn’t have before. I have learned thus far that students have short attention spans, so it’s always good to keep them on their toes by changing it up every new grading period.

- Preparing presentations for parents, administrators, school boards, and the public

Description: Although I did not complete it for class, I had to "prepare" an informative packet for the Belle Vernon Area School District "school board" to ask permission for the newly created inline hockey team to use the school logo. In order to do this, I had to use the Microsoft Office application to type up a letter and provide information that the board requested. I grew as an educator in the process because it was the first time that I had to work directly with a school board in a professional manner. My student players directly gained from this experience because the board approved my inquiry, and the team is in the middle of its inaugural season representing the school.
Reflection: The letter I wrote to the School Board single-handedly got the inline hockey team accepted at the district. Our goal was to receive the permission to use the BVA logo, but what resulted was full support from the board. At the meeting, the head speaker complimented me on how "professional" my letter was and because of how the material was presented in such an informative and organized manner, the team was accepted unanimously.

Description: I created an Acceptable Use Policy in my GILT 514 class for a district to use in order to let students and parents know of district guidelines when it comes to using the internet and being on the network. By creating this document, I successfully "prepared" a "presentation" for "parents and the public."
Reflection: Creating this document helped me better understand the “behind the scenes” paperwork that districts go through when setting up anything. Before this project, I was blind and somewhat arrogant to the system, thinking it was “easy” to set up a network at a district. I believed there only needed to be certain rules, and the rest would take care of itself. Writing an AUP really opened my eyes , and I matured.

I.C. Management and administration of technology programs at the building, district and regional levels
Rating: Proficient
Description: I created this IT proposal for a one room computer lab during the Summer of 2010. By creating this proposal, if it was accepted by an actual district, I successfully would have to manage "technology programs" at a high school building.
Reflection: My father has always mentioned that I am a creator, so I really did enjoy creating my own computer lab the way in which I believe computer labs should look for students. Although I enjoyed the creation part of this assignment, I was not a fan of looking up prices and capturing the data. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Mathematics; but when it comes to documenting and interpreting data and numbers... not so much.

I.D. Research, problem solving and product development of technological applications
- Basic principles of instructional design associated with the development of instructional technology materials,
- Emerging programming, authoring, and problem solving environments including team and collaborative projects such as on-line workgroups,
- Designing and publishing on-line documents that present information and include links to critical resources.
Description: The video provided below is a how-to video on how to create video using windows movie maker. In order to create this video for my peers and colleagues, I needed to "research" the program through years of experience using it, "problem solve" what exactly people struggle with when using the program, and "develop the product" of the video in a user-friendly way. Once finished, I "published" the video "on-line" on You Tube for the public to see and use.
Reflection: I have used this view in my classroom since its creation because I use WMM to my students to create videos. They loved how easy it was to use, and the videos created were top notch. People love to learn things quickly, so by presenting the material in only a few minutes... people pay attention.
