Instructional Delivery: Evidence Item #1
Item Name:
Sentence Study
Description of Item:
This is the original Sentence Study board that I use at the beginning of class on certain days to teach grammar on a sentence-by-sentence basis.
Reflection:
One of the biggest stigmas against teaching English is the fact that teachers have to teach grammar. I, for one, hated teaching it for years. However, one day I was browsing Instagram, and I found a teacher who taught sentences on a whiteboard using magnetic labels for the different aspects of grammar. I then thought, "how would I incorporate that in a high school class?" And this is how the Sentence Study board on the SMARTboard was formed. Every week on a certain day based on the day's lesson, I start the period with a sentence study that has my students either edit a sentence or revise one to make it better. This weekly practice has put the emphasis on quality over quantity - a common theme of my pedagogy - and I've noticed that students are more prone to write better sentences because of it.
