Planning/Preparation: Evidence Item #5
Item Name:
Differentiating Between Texts - A Sound of Thunder & Jurassic Park
Description of Item:
Activity where students differentiate between two descriptive texts focusing on the aesthetics of a Tyrannosaurus Rex
Context & Date Used:
10th grade Advanced English II, April 2018
Reflection:
Due to the PLN grant, I was able to order a class set of a childhood favorite, Jurassic Park, to teach my Advanced English II classes. In anticipation for this unit, I created an activity which allowed students to read three different texts focusing on T-Rex: A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury, Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, and then the T-Rex breakout scene in the 1993 movie adaptation.
One of the PA Standards is for students to be able to differentiate and compare/contrast texts, especially in different mediums. By completing this activity, students get practice doing this exact skill by reading and analyzing an unfamiliar text, in the form of the Bradbury short story, and a familiar one, Jurassic Park, in prose and visual form. Students really like this lesson - as I've developed it throughout the years based on feedback.
