Last week presented a unique challenge due to parent-teacher conferences, diverting my focus from the usual routine. This 5-day week, however, brought forth a multitude of reflections on the unpredictability and emotional rollercoaster that defines the life of an educator.
Mondays are a test of motivation. Students arrive physically tired, emotionally spent from weekend dramas, or socially exhausted from late-night escapades. As educators, our role on Mondays is to inspire and uplift, setting a positive tone for the week ahead.
Big lessons unfold on Tuesdays, introducing projects and activities that demand attention. Surprises, both in and out of school, await us. My personal surprise this Tuesday involved a malfunctioning refrigerator at home, adding an unexpected layer of stress. In class, I presented our ambitious "Masque of the Red Death" project, met with anticipated confusion and questions as the complexity increased.
A mock trial competition at St. Vincent showcased the growth of my team members on Wednesday. Despite not winning, the random compliments from judges reflected their progress, a testament to their development compared to previous years.
On Thursday, returning to the routine, I tackled Wednesday's fires, addressed project queries, and edited newspaper articles. A typical day of managing multiple responsibilities and keeping the ship afloat.
The week concluded with exciting news – acceptance to present at the 2024 Three Rivers Educational Technology Conference in January. While thrilling, it adds another layer to my already full plate.
This week encapsulates the dynamic nature of an educator's life – not confined to a 9-5 cubicle, constantly adapting to unforeseen challenges. It involves immediate response to unexpected situations with students, maintaining a calm façade amidst changing plans, and juggling diverse responsibilities.
The life of a teacher spans planning, managing, completing professional duties, and, above all, instructing. Balancing the roles of a father, husband, coach, advisor, presenter, and adjunct professor, being a teacher remains the core and most rewarding aspect of my journey – truly, one of the best professions in the world.
